PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to seal a convincing shootout win.

The record winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen years.
