No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
